Anterior impingement causes pain at the front of the ankle, particularly when bending the foot upward, and is often related to bone spurs or scar tissue from previous ankle sprains. Posterior impingement causes pain at the back of the ankle, particularly when pointing the foot downward.
Evaluation generally includes reviewing your symptoms and any history of ankle injury, examining the ankle, and identifying which movements reproduce the pain. X-rays may be used if they are needed to look for bone spurs or other bony changes, and advanced imaging may be ordered when more detail is required.
