The road out of Jackson is named after where it goes. Chillicothe Street becomes Chillicothe Pike as it leaves the west side of town, carrying SR-93 and the US-35 business route for about three miles of two-lane road before the ramp onto US-35 proper. Coming the other way, the interchange back into town is the one signed for Jackson and Coalton.
Then it is roughly twenty-five miles of four-lane US-35 west, and this is the most rural of the four drives on our service-area list — hill country and woodland through Jackson and eastern Ross counties rather than river-valley farmland, with the Richmond Dale exit about the only landmark in between. Traffic is light, but there is no reasonable alternative route if the highway is closed, so it is worth checking conditions in winter before you set out.
As you reach Chillicothe, US-35 briefly runs together with US-23 on the east side of the city; keep following US-35 west, signed for Columbus and Dayton, as it bends around the north edge of town. Take the Bridge Street exit. Its ramp opens straight onto North Plaza Boulevard, and the office is a short distance along on the left, among the hotels and medical offices there.

Jackson is the seat of Jackson County, roughly 27 miles south-east of Chillicothe, with a 2020 census population of 6,252. The town was established in 1817 and named for Andrew Jackson, and it grew with iron and coal — the Star Furnace and Globe Iron companies worked the local mineral deposits, and the railroads took the population from under 300 in 1840 to more than 3,000 by 1880.
That industrial history brought Welsh families to the area in numbers: Jackson has the eighth-largest population of Welsh descent in the United States and the fourth-largest in Ohio. The Jackson County Apple Festival has marked the county's orchard industry since 1937, running from the Tuesday to the Saturday of the third weekend in September.
The landscape around the town is the reason the drive feels different from the US-23 corridor. Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve — 2,019 acres of sandstone bluffs and a small gorge, geologically an extension of the Hocking Hills — sits just north-west of the city, and the city's own Hammertown Lake is close by. This is hill country, and Chillicothe is where the hills give way to the Scioto valley.
